(CNN) - The South Korean president, Lee Myung-bak proposed on Sunday a plan to reunite his country with North Korea and suggested a tax for the cost if this process is realized, said a South Korean state agency.
"Today inter-Korean relations need a new scheme," Lee said in a speech that frames the 65th anniversary of Korean independence from Japanese colonial rule, Yonhap reported.
Lee said the two Countries should build a "peace community" and stressed the denuclearization of North Korea. He added that trade between the two Koreas are needed to help build the North Korean economy.
"It is imperative that both parties are committed to the coexistence rather than confrontation, progress instead of stagnation. The two need to overcome the present state of division and proceed with the goal of peaceful reunification," said Lee.
President of the Grand National Party was hit in the recent elections, which analysts see as a referendum on its response to the sinking of the battleship South Korea.
The boat South Korean navy, Cheonan, sank on March 26, killing 46 sailors, increasing tension on the Korean peninsula, but North Korea has denied being responsible for shooting the torpedo that sank the ship.
